Student ID Card for HiOA

Oslo and Akershus University College of Applied Sciences (Høgskolen i Oslo og Akershus, HiOA) currently has 16.000 students and University of Bergen 14.500. Each student will receive a confirmation proving that they attend the college when they start. They will also receive a receipt for their semester fee payment, which must be paid each semester. Both documentations must be presented to achieve student discounts.

Producing the student ID cards is time and paper consuming. Also, it is easy for students to forget to bring the card. Travel cards are not valid without student ID, so public transportation can easily become expensive, if you are fined.

Mobile phones have become a very important part of our everyday life with apps like travel cards, mobile banking, food recipes, and much more. Therefore, it was exciting to be able to add two different cards to our digital pocket.

You can log on to the app and check if your card is active and see your most recent semester fee payment. The inspector can clearly see your photo and if the student ID is valid for this semester.

We completed the application for Android and iPhone in the summer of 2014 and it was first launched at Oslo and Akershus University College of Applied Sciences (HiOA), and later on in the autumn, at the University of Bergen. The plan is to implement the scheme in all public universities and colleges from 2015.

Today, HiOA sends 23.000 semester receipts by post each semester. With the transition from paper receipt to app, the college expects a cost reduction of approx. NOK 200.000 in postage expenses each semester, in addition to saving huge amounts of administration work. Lowering paper consumption is also a contribution to saving the environment.

The students always carry the card with them, and it is easily accessible. In order to prevent cheating, we have added several animations and a large photo of the student. This will make it easier for e.g. bus drivers to check if the ID is valid and used by the right person. The photos and data are stored on the phone, so that the application works even without network access. The students log on in a secure manner, and can always see information about their most recent student fee payment.

– The students like it very much, management is pleased, and the technology works excellently.
